What is the HWT Aetna™ font?
HWT Aetna is a revival of the sturdy Roman style of wood type most often called simply Aetna. This new digital version by Aaron Bell features four widths all based on the various widths commonly offered by 19th Century wood type manufacturers.
In addition, there is a four-layer all-caps version Aetna based on the the famous Wm. History of HWT Aetna Font
HWT Aetna is a fascinating, historical typeface that carries a rich legacy. Created by the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, the mission of this institution was to digitize and preserve the legacy of vintage wood type fonts for contemporary usage. The creation of HWT Aetna was led by the talented typeface designer Aaron Bell, who took inspiration from the original Aetna wood type of the late 19th century.
The original Aetna was a wood type widely used in large print advertisements, posters, and broadsides. It was known for its striking, high-contrast letterforms that commanded attention. The creation process of HWT Aetna involved careful scanning and digitization of the original wood type specimens to accurately represent its unique characteristics and nuances.
Launched in 2013, HWT Aetna bridges the gap between the past and the present, preserving the spirit of the historical predecessor while being tailored for contemporary digital and physical applications. This font has enabled designers worldwide to inject a dash of vintage appeal into their modern designs.
